Tata Motors signed an agreement in 2007 with a French firm, Motor Development International, to produce a compressed air car Nano. Though several variants were proposed, none were put into production. The Ford Model T’s initial price was about $850, equivalent to $29,747 in 2022. Announced as the lowest priced production car in the world, Tata aimed for a price of one lakh rupees, or ₹100,000, which was approximately $2,000 US at launch time.

In natural gas operation, the engine delivered maximum power of 33 horsepower and 45 Nm of maximum torque. The tank had a capacity of 32 liters (8 US Gal/7 UK Gal) of CNG. The Tata Nano is a city car/microcar manufactured and marketed by Indian automaker Tata Motors over a single generation from 2008 to 2018. It was primarily sold in India as an inexpensive economy car for motorcycle and scooter drivers — with a launch price of ₹100,000 (US$2,500) on 10 January 2008. The Nano has a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and was initially produced as a four-door saloon car with no rear cargo opening, with a five-door hatchback version introduced in 2015.

We won’t call the ride quality great but the overall experience is decent. It feels slightly bumpy over imperfect roads, especially for the rear occupants. So, for its core use as a city car, you’ll find the ride quality to be at acceptable mark, if not above. While the manual version doesn’t allow you to complain, performance of the auto version is a wee bit lacking. Automatics anyway sap more power than manual transmissions and the Nano already have very few horses to exhaust.

For a sub-650cc engine, it feels pleasantly peppy under initial acceleration and continues to be so till 80kph. One of the biggest contributors for this performance is its light weight that tips at just 600 kilograms. Driveability is great and the tiny engine never feels underpowered (as compared to sub1000cc cars) in the start-stop condition. You’ll hardly need any frequent downshifting when commuting around the city. Even in 2nd gear, you can crawl in slow moving traffic, save for the times the Nano comes to a complete halt.

It has to be revved harder than that in manual to make it gain higher speeds. The shift quality is not the best and can also falter and act confused if the revs are on the higher side. The highlight of the GenX Nano in terms of interiors has to be the access to the rear boot area. It’s still not sufficient to carry the weekend luggage but decent enough to hold mundane groceries. There are small pockets on door trims and also some space for tickets and tolls inside the utility trays on the dashboard. However, the GenX Nano is not limited to superficial updates only. It gets a new boot lid which makes the rear luggage space easily accessible and importantly, it features an automatic gearbox.

There is a chrome accent above the rear bumper on the lid and a similar grille like front without brake lights. Since the rear bumper has been completely redesigned, the central exhaust opening has been replaced by a more car like exhaust outlet placed on the left and neatly tucked inside the bumper. As far as addressing my ideal wish list of a perfect city car goes, the Nano does its bit. Its dimensions surely make it a practical traffic intruder and with its smallest turning radius, you can change directions according to your own whim. Powering the new gen Nano is the same two-cylinder multi point fuel injected 624cc petrol engine. This unit makes 38PS of power and 51Nm of torque; figures which were updated with the Twist. It comes with a 4-speed manual transmission and to make it inch closer to the most convenient tag, there is the AMT variant which has a 5-Speed automatic unit

With various new features, the new GenX has surely become a lot richer and more up-market product than its predecessor. It gets new-generation Tata signature electric power-assisted steering wheel with active return function and speed sensitivity, and first-in-segment color themes. The new Nano GenX with significant cosmetic updates looks sportier than the old model. The car features new smoke headlamps with black bezel and large circular fog lamps, front and rear bumpers with Infinity motif grille, a piano black hood garnish and integrated tailgate spoiler. The hatchback gets a new color – Sangria Red – along with the regular shades. Suspension is tuned for city and at those speeds, the Nano is a great car to live with.

As long as you are not trying to be too enthusiastic, the Nano will never really disappoint you with nice overall behaviour. However, crossing the 90kph mark on the speedo will make things a bit nervous, the cross winds starts affecting. Also, if a faster vehicle passes by, the Nano loses a bit of its composure.

The Nano was not fitted with airbags, not even one for the driver, nor ABS. The Nano had only static two-point seatbelts for the rear seats and no child seat available for sale in India could pass the installation check, meaning that the Nano was unsuitable for safely transporting children. It achieved zero stars for child occupant protection, scoring no points in all areas of assessment.
